My Top Gravel Bike Picks

2024 Orbea Terra M31eTEAM 1x

[product-block handle="7761108959424-orbea-terra-m31eteam-1x-gravel-bike-2024-small"/]

The Orbea Terra has a special place in my heart because it was my gravel bike back in 2022 when I raced the Unbound Gravel 200 for the first time. It got me through Unbound’s rough roads, it survived the heinous mud, and it even helped me beat the sun! I’ve recommended the Terra to countless riders, and I think it provides everything both aspiring and advanced gravel riders need.

2023 3T Exploro PRIMO Rival AXS XPLR

[product-block handle="7974037913792-3t-exploro-primo-rival-axs-xplr-1x12-gravel-bike-2023-large"/]

When gravel exploded in popularity, 3T made waves by introducing the Exploro, the first aero-focused gravel race bike. 3T has continued to refine the Exploro through the years, and it’s now available in 5 different versions. The Exploro Primo is the affordable all-rounder in the Exploro line-up, splitting the difference between the more race-oriented Exploro RaceMax and adventure-oriented Exploro Ultra.

2023 Masi Incanto Ti Rival AXS

[product-block handle="8002585067712-masi-incanto-ti-rival-axs-gravel-bike-2023-54cm"/]

If you want a gravel bike that will last a lifetime, nothing beats titanium. So I went looking for a titanium frame to feature and this Masi Incanto Ti caught my eye because Masi is a name with serious heritage. The founder, Faliero Masi, built bikes for legends like Merckx, Anquetil, and Coppi. Dave Stoller, the lead character in Breaking Away (1979), rode a Masi too. It makes me want to say, “Buon giorno, Papa! Come Stai?

My Top MTB Picks

2021 Revel Bikes Rail29 X0 Transmission

[product-block handle="7693095469248-revel-bikes-rail29-x0-transmission-mountain-bike-2021-large"/]

Revel frames always impress me. I’ve cut a couple in half (for warranty purposes) and the quality of their carbon frames reminds me of Santa Cruz. They're so clean and consistent on the inside! The price of this Revel Rail29 is crazy to me too because it has FOX Factory suspension and a SRAM X0 Transmission. It has enough travel for big hits, but the efficient CBF suspension means it’ll always be an easy pedal back to the top.

2023 Propain Hugene X01

[product-block handle="8025400672448-propain-hugene-x01-mountain-bike-2023-medium"/]

Propain is a newer name in the US, but with riders like Remy Metailler and Phil Atwill absolutely shredding on their bikes, I’ve been curious about them for a while. Propain's PRO10 suspension system looks really unique and the floating shock is supposed to provide a cushy bottomless feel. This Hugene trail bike has FOX Factory suspension and should crush everything from fast flow trails to gnarly tech.

2024 Cervélo ZFS-5 120

[product-block handle="8054733963456-cervelo-zfs-5-120-mountain-bike-2024-large"/]

This Cervelo ZFS-5 is on the more expensive end, but I can’t stop looking at it! Cervelo mountain bikes are pretty new still, so you don’t see many on the trails. Not only is this bike unique, but it has a baller build with SRAM XX SL Transmission and RockShox Ultimate suspension. With alloy wheels, it’s still under 25 pounds! It’s a capable racer as is, but with some lightweight carbon wheels, it’d be ready to compete in the pro ranks.

My Top Road Bikes Picks

2023 Look 795 Blade 105

[product-block handle="7874398814400-look-795-blade-105-road-bike-2023-large"/]

When I was tracking winning bikes from the 2023 Tour de France, the Look 795 Blade aero bike of the Cofidis team captivated me with its beauty. It was fast enough to beat the mighty Wout van Aert and earn Cofidis their first Tour stage win in 15 years. I’d love to get one with the classic Look Mondrian paint, but this blue colorway is nice too. With Shimano 105, it could be a perfect budget race rig or Strava PR hunter.

2023 Trek Émonda ALR Di2

[product-block handle="8054759456960-trek-emonda-alr-di2-road-bike-2023-60cm"/]

With the release of the new Trek Madone, the carbon Emonda is likely dead, and that makes me sad. My guess though is that the aluminum Emonda ALR will carry on as Trek’s budget-friendly road frame. If so, that makes me happy because it’s a solid competitor to the Specialized Allez and Cannondale CAAD13. This Emonda ALR has great looking paint and an amazing Shimano Ultegra/Dura-Ace build for under $3,000. If I were tall enough, this bike would probably already be in my garage!

2024 Giant Propel Advanced SL

[product-block handle="7902397759680-giant-propel-advanced-sl-road-bike-2024-small"/]

I’m a Giant fan. Their bikes might not please the r/bikeporn crowd, but I think they make some of the best value high-performance bikes in the business. The new Propel is definitely a speed demon, taking a pretty solid win at this year’s Tour de France. At just over 15 pounds, it’s also one of the lightest aero bikes on the market! This one also happens to have a 1x setup, and as a 1x evangelist, I wholeheartedly approve.

My Top Component Picks

SRAM Code Bronze Stealth 4-Piston Brake

[product-block handle="sram-code-bronze-stealth-4-piston-brake-set-c1-left-front"/]

[product-block handle="sram-code-bronze-stealth-4-piston-brake-set-c1-right-rear"/]

I have SRAM Code brakes on my trail bike and the levers are totally trashed from all my crashes over the years. I’m looking to replace them and I’m probably going to go with these Code Bronze Stealth brakes. They’re the cheapest Codes, but they have the same stopping power as the Code Silver/Ultimate. I hit the ground so much, there’s no need for something nicer!

Vision Metron 5D Integrated Carbon Handlebar

[product-block handle="vision-metron-5d-integrated-carbon-handlebar"/]

I’m thinking about upgrading my road bike with these handlebars because they’re the same handlebars used by two-time Tour de France winner, Jonas Vingegaard. A lot of top riders from Visma, EF Education, Bahrain Victorious, and more also use these one-piece Vision bars too. They’re super aero, super stiff, and super expensive… until now.

CeramicSpeed OSPW X Cerakote Limited Edition Off-Road Shimano XT/XTR 12s

[product-block handle="7459575857344-ceramicspeed-ospw-x-cerakote-limited-edition-off-road-shimano-xt-xtr-12s"/]

Oversized pulley wheel systems aren’t a great value considering the watt savings they provide (1-3 watts usually), but they look SO DAMN COOL. These special edition Ceramicspeed Cerakote OSPWs are serious bling, and since they’re on sale, I’m kind of tempted!

My Top Frame Pick

ENVE FRAY Frame

[product-block handle="7739473133760-enve-fray-frame"/]

There are a lot of frames on sale, but this is only one that I just can’t stop looking at — the ENVE Fray. Specifically, I’m drawn to the Venom colorway (click in to see it). This acid green color is what I’d paint my Lamborghini… you know, if I had one. The Fray is high on my list as a potential future bike. It’s a versatile all-road bike that can handle road and gravel, so it would simplify my life a lot since I definitely have too many bikes

My Top Wheel Picks

Industry Nine Trail 270 w/ I9 Hydra Hubs

[product-block handle="7909034426560-industry-nine-trail-270-w-i9-hydra-hubs-alloy-tubeless-29-wheelset"/]

I love when a good affordable wheelset comes with Industry Nine’s Hydra hubs. The Hydras offer 690 points of engagement, which feels and sounds amazing. I’m building up a bikepacking rig and these alloy Trail 270 wheels have a 27mm internal width, which will work great with the wide XC tires I plan to run on them, and they’re under $800, which will help me save for bikepacking bags.

Princeton CarbonWorks Grit 4540

[product-block handle="8049783603392-princeton-carbonworks-grit-4540-carbon-tubeless-700c-wheelset"/]

I have lusted after Prince CarbonWorks’ wavy aero wheels for a very long time, but new ones have always been well outside of my budget. These pre-owned Grit 4540 wheels though are just cheap enough that I’m considering slapping them on my gravel rig to race Unbound next year. Maybe the aero gains from that wavy profile will help me finish under 12 hours again!

My Top Apparel Picks

Fizik Vento Infinito Knit Carbon 2 Road Shoes

[product-block handle="fizik-vento-infinito-knit-carbon-2-road-bike-shoes"/]

I'm a big fan of knit cycling shoes. I’ve put a lot of miles on my Giro Empire E70 Knit and Rapha Explore Powerweave shoes and they’re some of the most comfortable and breathable shoes I’ve ever used. I have wide-ish feet too and the knit uppers expand nicely to hug my fat flippers. My Giro Empires are 6 years old now, so I’m considering replacing them with these hot red Fizik Vento Infinito Knit road shoes.

Giro Manifest Spherical Helmet

[product-block handle="giro-manifest-spherical-helmet"/]

I ride in the Giro Manifest helmet right now and I think it might be the best trail helmet I’ve ever used. The shape fits my round head really well, the padding is super comfy, and the ventilation is the best I’ve ever experienced with a trail helmet. I also like the Spherical MIPS protection. You get good rotational impact protection without an annoying plastic MIPS liner messing with your helmet's fit.

Sweet Protection Falconer Aero 2Vi MIPS Helmet

[product-block handle="sweet-protection-falconer-aero-2vi-mips-helmet-1"/]

I’ve been eyeing up the Sweet Protection Falconer Aero ever since I saw Alexey Vermeulen wearing it in the Life Time Grand Prix. Jonas Abrahamsen of the Uno-X squad also made it look very good during his breakaway antics at this year’s Tour de France. The Falconer Aero has a nice shape, unique colors, and the aero vent covers are magnetic and removable for when the temps start rising.

Ripton & Co Men’s Hemmed Jorts

[product-block handle="7470940979392-ripton-co-men-039-s-hemmed-jorts"/]

I LOVE Ripton Jorts. I don’t just ride in them. Watch our Instagram and YouTube videos and you might notice that I wear them all day every day. The stretch denim is super comfy and they accommodate my beefy cycling thighs nicely. I’m no fashion expert, but I say jorts are cool. Everyone should wear jorts. Jorts forever!
