A Guide on The Best Chain Lube for Various Cycling Conditions

Whether you are cycling on gravel roads, dusty trails, or preparing for a long-distance road tour, using the right chain lube plays a critical role in your bike maintenance. Not only does it preserve the life of your chain and drivetrain, but it also enhances your cycling performance by offering smooth rides. Let's delve into the best chain lubes for various conditions, from gravel bikes & dusty areas to long-distance road conditions, and point out some specific notable brands.

Dry conditions (Gravel & Dusty Places)

For dry and dusty conditions, your chain lube should be dirt-repelling to prevent the build-up of grime. Using a dry lube would be more efficient since they attract less dust. Most dry lubes are made up of waxes and flake off as they attract dirt.

  • Muc-Off Dry Lube (sold by TPC): This lube penetrates deep into the chain links, offering long-lasting lubrication and protection.
  • Finish Line Dry: Teflon based, it penetrates hard-to-reach areas and stays intact longer.
  • Squirt Long Lasting Dry Lube: Earns praise in the mountain biking community for its durability and clean operation.

Wet Condition Lubricants

Wet conditions require a lube that can resist being washed out. Wet lubes are viscous and stick to the chain longer, limiting the effects of moisture.

  • Finish Line Wet Bike Lubricant: This lube is made for extreme weather conditions and is water-resistant, thus ideal for wet conditions.
  • Muc-Off Wet Lube (sold by TPC): Highly durable in the harshest of weather conditions and keeps the chain running smoothly.

Long Distance Road Conditions

For endurance or long-distance road conditions, choose a versatile lube that can withstand both dusty and slightly damp environments.

  • Boeshield T-9: Rust-inhibitor properties make this useful for long, tough rides.
  • Finish Line Cross Country: Known for its versatility and durability across varying conditions.
  • CeramicSpeed UFO Drip Chain Coating (sold by TPC): It is a hybrid between grease and oil offering lower friction and longer lifespan.

Our Favorite Chain Lubes at TPC

For dry conditions, our mechanics prefer Rock-N-Roll’s Gold and Extreme and Muc-Off Bio Dry. These are best applied after thorough degreasing. They keep chains very clean on dusty Colorado roads and trails but need to be reapplied regularly.

Tri-Flow Superior Lubricant Drip wet lube - $10.18

For wet lubes, the go-to is classic Tri-Flow Superior Lubricant, which is long-lasting in all conditions.

Murdick, who favors durability, likes combining Dumonde Tech with a wet lube.

Dumonde Tech Original lube - $11.15

“Dumonde Tech is in a bit of a category of its own because it is a liquid that polymerizes under pressure,” he explained. “It’s compatible with the factory grease because it will bind to the metal underneath so it’s a great lube on its own for wet or dry conditions or used as a back-up alongside another wet lube.

“If you go out for an epic ride or have unexpected creek crossings that wash away your lube, the Dumonde Tech is still there to get you home. It’s not quite as good at reducing noise and friction, so my personal bikes use a combination of Dumonde Tech with wet lube on top.”

What about chain waxing?

To reduce friction and maximize drivetrain life, many will swear by chain waxing. This doesn't refer to using wax-based drip lubes, but rather, immersion waxing and wax top lubes/coatings.

Chain wax will save watts, reduce wear, and keep the chain cleaner, but applying it isn't as simple as dripping it onto the chain. First, the chain needs to be fully striped to bare metal. Then it's waxed either by immersing it in wax in a slow cooker or applying a top lube (my favorite wax top lube is Silca Super Secret Chain Coating).

For most, waxing requires too much prep to be practical. Drip lubes are more convenient and provide enough performance for the average rider. But if you're a racer or high-mileage rider looking to take your chain lubrication to the next level, it can be worth the extra effort.

Remember, the right application is just as important as the type of lube. Apply slowly, only on the inside of the chain while pedaling backwards and, after a few minutes, remove the excess with a cloth. The lube needs time to penetrate into the rollers, so ideally you should wait at least an hour, preferably more.

Using the correct chain lube for your particular cycling conditions can significantly enhance the longevity of your chain and the overall performance of your bike ride. Bear in mind that the most expensive lube isn't necessarily always the best one for your specific applications.
