SRAM X01 Eagle AXS XG-1295 Cassette Review - A TPC Quick-Take
The SRAM X01 Eagle AXS XG-1295 Cassette is one of the premier components in the SRAM lineup and is designed to be used with the X01 Eagle mechanical and AXS drivetrain systems. It’s garnered attention for its lightweight design and seamless shifting capabilities with its expanded gear range of 520%.
Pros:
Weight Reduction:
Significant weight reduction is a key highlight of the SRAM X01 Eagle AXS XG-1295 Cassette. The cassette weighs 350 grams compared to the GX version which weighs 451 grams, providing a noticeable weight difference, especially considering this weight is rotational mass connected to the wheel, which makes a big difference when riding.
Improved Shifting:
Some of our users have noted that the shifting is smoother and crisper with the X01 cassette, attributed to the cassette being stamped out of one piece of metal, making the shifting experience much better compared to the GX version.
Durability and Strength:
The 10-52 tooth cluster of the X01 is machined out of a single piece of Chromoly, and the 52 tooth is aluminum, making it stronger and more durable than the GX version where each cog is made from stamped steel and pinned together2. Additionally, the X-DOME architecture of the X01 XG-1295 Eagle 12-speed cassette is cited as one of the strongest cassettes on the market.
Enhanced Performance:
The X01 Eagle AXS XG-1295 Cassette, when combined with the X01 chain, has been found to significantly enhance the shifting quality, making it worth the upgrade.
Cons:
Cost:
The X01 Eagle AXS XG-1295 Cassette can be almost twice the price of the GX cassette, making it a considerable investment.
Weight of Related Components:
While the cassette itself is lighter, when part of the Eagle AXS X01 drivetrain, the derailleur is heavier compared to some mechanical offerings like Shimano’s XTR mechanical offering.
Durability Concerns:
Although designed for strength, the longevity of the cassette's finish and performance over an extended period remains to be validated by long-term rider reports.
Our Bottom Line:
The SRAM X01 Eagle AXS XG-1295 Cassette offers a blend of reduced weight, enhanced shifting quality, and superior strength, making it a worthy upgrade for serious cyclists or those looking to shave off some weight from their setups. However, the higher cost may deter some, and the overall weight savings could be offset if integrating with other heavier components of the Eagle AXS X01 drivetrain. So while the upfront cost is higher, the improved performance and potential durability of the X01 cassette may justify the investment for avid riders seeking a high-quality, reliable component.
