2022 Specialized Stumpjumper Alloy Review - A TPC Rider's Quick Take
We’ve been following the evolution of the Stumpjumper line, and the prospect of an alloy version sparks intrigue at TPC-HQ. Can it deliver the Stumpjumper magic without the carbon price tag? Here are our first-hand impressions.
Pros
Well-Tested Geometry
The Stumpjumper Alloy retains the tried and true geometry of its pricier counterparts. It feels confident on descents, agile on tight trails, and has a climbing posture that many will find comfortable.
Durable Alloy Frame
There's a robustness to an alloy frame that some riders swear by. It may not have the feather-light quality of carbon, but for many, the peace of mind when taking on rugged terrain or the accidental drop is worth it.
Solid Component Selection
Considering its price point, Specialized did not skimp on the essentials. The SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain and RockShox/X-Fusion suspension create a reliable and efficient trail experience.
Cons
Weight Considerations
The alloy frame does bring additional weight compared to its carbon siblings. For those counting every gram or aiming for ultra-fast uphill times, it's something to consider.
Component Trade-offs
While the bike boasts dependable components, it's evident that some trade-offs were made to keep it budget-friendly. The seasoned trail rider might find themselves wanting to upgrade down the line.
Less Responsive Feel
While sturdy and reliable, the alloy frame does not provide the same level of responsiveness and vibration dampening as the carbon models.
Our Bottom Line
The 2022 Specialized Stumpjumper Alloy provides a great entry point into the world of trail riding, leveraging the renowned Stumpjumper pedigree without the top-tier price. It's a reliable workhorse, ready to tackle any trail, though weight and component compromises remind you of its more budget-friendly position in the lineup.
If you're seeking a dependable trail bike that won't break the bank and carries a legacy of reliable performance, the Stumpjumper Alloy is a solid choice. While it might not have the feather-light aura or the ultra-responsive feel of its pricier relatives, it remains a steadfast and capable partner on the trails. For riders who value durability and aren't chasing podiums, it's a bike that promises to deliver many memorable trail days.
TPC Rider’s Contrarian Take -
For those looking to purchase their first full-suspension bike, this is about as good as it gets. For me personally, I would skip over the Alloy Stumpy due to the components. I would be better off buying a higher-end build due to the prices it would cost to switch everything out.
The components I would switch would have to be the brakes first. While Tektro Gemini is not the worst, I would be craving something with more power and 4 pistons. Next would be suspension. I crave adjustability and downhill performance when it comes to suspension. The absence of a reservoir on the X-Fusion shock and the lack of adjustability on the fork would leave me wanting much more.
