2006 saw the birth of the first Specialized CX bike, the Tricross. What started as all Aluminum eventually saw the bike become 100% carbon fiber, even with a single-speed version. The Tricross bikes were very versatile, with a few pro-only builds featuring mounts for fenders and racks.

Specialized didn’t stop with the Tricross and came out with the CruX in 2010. It featured more dedicated cross-specific geometry and no rack mounts. The pros were racing aluminum versions before the newer carbon fiber model debuted in 2013. The CruX was updated in 2017 as disc brake-only and ready for gravel. In 2021, the CruX got another update, making it crazy-light, 725g for the S-Works frame, and favoring gravel over ‘cross with its larger tires. It’s still being raced as a cyclocross rig and to great success by pro riders; now it has the room to fit 700x47 tires or 650bx2.1” for a rad ride.
