The Roubaix is possibly one of Specialized's most popular bikes. It has the carbon fiber and pizazz of a full-on race bike, along with the silk-road feel of a classic steel racer. The Roubaix was built for Europe’s cobblestone classics, offering a smooth ride over varying terrain.

When the Roubaix was first debuted in 2004, the design included a longer wheelbase, more stack, and less reach than the already popular Tarmac. Over time, the SL2, SL3, and SL4 models were added, all being lighter and including a disc brake option. In 2017, Specialized debuted the FutureShock, with 20mm of vertical damping. In 2020, they added extensive aero shaping and a seatpost junction, allowing rearward flex.
S-Works Roubaix
S-Works is what designates the pro-level carbon-fiber blend and build kit for the premier-level Roubaix. The S-Works Roubaix is what sponsored racers ride at the Paris-Roubaix, Ghent-Wevelgem, and de Ronde races. When Specialized releases a new iteration, all the changes filter down the line, so the 2019 Roubaix Pro, Elite, Comp, and Sport all have the same frame features.

2023 Specialized Roubaix - A TPC Quick-Take
The Specialized Roubaix has long been one of the more popular endurance road bikes on the market, known for its smooth and comfortable ride quality. With the latest iteration, Specialized has aimed to make the Roubaix more performance-oriented, while retaining the bike's signature comfort and compliance.
The 2023 Roubaix features the Future Shock 3.1 Smooth Boot suspension system in the headtube, which helps absorb road vibrations and impacts. This, combined with its endurance-oriented geometry and wide tire clearance, makes the Roubaix an excellent choice for riders seeking a confident and comfortable ride, whether on smooth pavement or rougher roads.
Pros
- Innovative suspension: The Future Shock 3.1 system and the rear damping setup are highly praised for their ability to absorb road imperfections, providing an unmatched smooth ride.
- Comfort-oriented design: The frame geometry, combined with the suspension features, offers a comfortable riding posture, reducing rider fatigue over long distances.
- Versatile performance: Excelling on both smooth tarmac and challenging surfaces, the Roubaix is adaptable to various riding conditions, making it a great all-rounder.
- Quality components: Despite the price point, the bike comes equipped with reliable components that contribute to its overall performance and durability.
Cons
- Price point: While offering significant value, the Roubaix is still an investment, particularly at higher-spec levels, which may not suit all budgets.
- Limited customization: The integrated headtube suspension and specific design choices may limit aftermarket modification options for those looking to personalize their ride further.
Bottom Line
The Specialized Roubaix is a stand out for us thank to its innovative approach to comfort and performance on the road. Its advanced suspension systems set new standards in ride quality, particularly beneficial for endurance riders facing diverse terrains. While the design prioritizes function over form and comes with a premium price tag, the Roubaix's performance and versatility justify the investment for cyclists seeking a top-tier endurance bike. Whether tackling cobbled classics or long weekend rides, the Roubaix offers a blend of comfort, durability, and all-around capability that’s hard to match.
